Visiting Fundacao da Casa de Mateus, Portugal

On the way to Ventozelo, we briefly stopped at a Fundacao da Casa de Mateus in Vila Real.

According to Wikipedia:
The winery buildings date from the 16th century and were modified in the 1800s. Architect Nicolau Nasoni was involved in the project to construct the palace, which took place in the 18th century, possibly between 1739 and 1743, according to one expert. António José Botelho Mourão, 3rd Morgado of Mateus, authorized the work. The current manor replaced the former family house built in the same location in the early 1600s. In 1910, it was classified as a National Monument.

The estate had a gorgeous garden and vineyard, and we enjoyed strolling through them. However, the art collection was not very impressive—a bit subpar for a powerful government official like Antonio Hise Botellho Mourao.

Since Inna had made lunch reservations at Quinta de La Rosa, we hurried to drive there. We made a few incorrect turns but eventually found our way.

We also stopped for a few minutes in the small village of Pinhao. The village's train station and small shops were nearby. There was minimal parking on the narrow, windy streets. We also saw advertisements for small boat tours along the Douro River. As we were in a hurry, we did not stay very long.

Eventually, we arrived 30 minutes late at Quinta de La Rosa (we had reservations for 13:00). I had trouble finding parking but found a spot. We checked in with our hostess and were seated outdoors. There was light rain, but it did not bother us, as the views of the Douro River below were breathtaking.

We looked at the menu and ordered a few items. However, when the entrees were delivered, bees attacked Inna's dish, and we moved back indoors to continue our lunch.

We had ordered the following items for lunch (the prices were exceedingly high):

  • Drinks: Pink Spritz (Inna), Sparkling Water
  • Appetizer: Fresh Salad, Ravioli (small portion)
  • Inna: Pork
  • Boris: Monkfish

We did not like the overpriced entrees and were not very satisfied with our dining experience (though the staff was pleasant). My monkfish was mediocre, and Inna's pork was also average.
