After some lengthy deliberations, I decided to purchase Wing Foiling gear to learn to Wing Foil while living in the Marina district of San Francisco. It was an early birthday present to me!
I met up with Jesse at Boardsports Alameda, and he recommended the following wing foiling gear:
- 2022 (S26) 5'10 x 29" Naish Hover Wing Foil GS board 110-liter (with Rail Saver Pro Tape) -$1259
- Armstrong HS Foil Kit - 1850cm front wing with 85cm carbon mast- $2549
- 2022 Duotone Slick SLS Wing with Aluminum Boom and Large Pump - $1088.95
It was all costly, but I hope it is worth it!
Jesse was against purchasing inflatable boards (due to their poor feel/connection to the foil). He initially recommended the 125-liter Naish board, but I thought it was too large for me (at 6'4").
He also thought I could start with the 1550cm front wing, but it might work well for a beginner in lighter wind conditions. Thus, I decided to start with the 1850cm wing, with long-term plans to move to 1250cm (when I improved).
Since Jesse did not have a board bag in the right size, I purchased the Epic Gear Day Wall Foil 5'11" bag from Windance in Hood River, OR.
Sunday, August 21, 2022 Update
I have used the wing foiling gear for the past 3 weeks, foiling 13 times. I am starting to understand how to control the board during flights.
Regarding the gear, I really like the Naish Hover 110GS foil board. It's relatively light, stable, and handles well. Long term, I see myself switching to a lower-volume board for more maneuverability.
The Duotone Slick SLS Wing has been excellent, except for being fragile. I see the need for a smaller, 4.0m wing for windy sessions at Crissy.
The Armstrong foil has been excellent. In the long term, I buy a smaller front wing to increase overall speed.
