After staying in Arnold, where we enjoyed listening to music on the patio (with the installed Bluetooth Patio Speakers), we decided it would be a great idea to do so in our home.
I researched many available options on wirecutter.com and finally decided on the following possibilities:
- OSD Audio AP650 - $194.99
- Requires a separate outdoor 2-channel amp
- OSD Audio BTP525 - $179.99
- 5.25 Inch Woofer
- Built-in Amp with Bluetooth
- Pyle Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker (Pyle PDWR64BTB) - $206.39
- Built-in Amp with Bluetooth
- 6.5 Inch Woofer
- 2-WayWeatherproof Wall/Ceiling Mounted Dual Speakers w/Heavy Duty Grill
- Universal Mount, Patio, Indoor Use
- Focal 100 OD8 Outdoor Loudspeaker - Each (White)- 2 x $239
- Requires a separate outdoor 2-channel amp
I decided to try the Pyle PDWR64BTB due to the favorable reviews on Amazon.com and the relatively low price. I wanted a simple solution without having to bother with a separate waterproof 2-channel power amp like the Pyle Marine Bluetooth Amplifier.
I also ordered the following accessories to mount the Pyle Speakers in my backyard:
- Amazon Basics 16-Gauge Speaker Wire Cable, 50 Feet
- MOBOREST RCA Cable Audio Adapter (to convert speaker wire to RCA for Pyle outputs)
- Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug, Smart Home Wi-Fi Outlet Timer
Since the speakers are mounted on our wooden fence, about 20 feet apart in my backyard, 20 feet of speaker wire are required (in addition to a speaker wire to the RCA converter). The Kasa Smart Plug turns the Pyle speaker on/off (so it's not always on).
Pyle Outdoor Speaker Review
Highlights
- Pyle's Bluetooth connects quickly and has an excellent range
- For two 6.5-inch speakers, the price is quite reasonable
- Sounds decent
Lowlights
- When connecting to Bluetooth, it makes an annoying chirp
- At max power, I hear distortion coming out of the speaker
- Even though it's rated at 400W, the speaker sounds like 40W
- Instead of a standard speaker connection, Pyle requires the use of an RCA to-speaker adapter
