Tennis Volley
- Grip
- Use Continental(2) or bevel (2) grip. It minimizes grip changes during the game.
- Slide the hand further than usual on the grip for more control.
- Preparation (when the opponent hits the ball)
- Knees are slightly bent
- The racket is held in front at a 30-degree angle
- Watch the ball
- When the opponent hits the ball, do a split step toward the ball.
- Decide between a Forehand Volley or a Backhand Volley
- Forehand Volley
- Turn right foot 45 degrees
- Move the racket to a vertical position with a bent arm
- Step forward with your left foot
- Execute a short "karate" chop motion using your wrist
- You should contact the ball 1-1.5 feet in front of your chest (racket tip should still be up)
- The right arm fully extends after contact
- Backhand Volleys
- Turn left foot 45 degrees
- Move the racket to a vertical position with a bent arm and turn the shoulders.
- Step forward with your right foot
- Execute a short "karate" chop motion
- You should contact the ball 1-1.5 feet in front of your chest (racket tip should still be up)
- The right arm fully extends after contact
- Completion
- Bring arms back
- Get ready for the next volley
- Move your head to observe the ball
- Refinement
- The goal is to hit sharp angles to the side of the court
- Try to hit volleys at shoulder height, as you can hit them much harder than low-hit balls
- Keep arms in front to minimize extra movement. Never bring elbows behind the body.
- The swing occurs during the forward body movement.
